, researchers at University of California, San Francisco, found that patients who took a quetiapine formulation for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were twice as likely to develop bipolar disorder compared to those who took their quetiapine monotherapy. A previous study found that patients who took quetiapine for bipolar depression also had a higher rate of bipolar disorder.
Quetiapine is a member of the Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor class of antidepressants. Patients who take quetiapine for depression also have a higher rate of bipolar disorder. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and reduce anxiety.
Researchers found that patients who took a quetiapine formulation for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were twice as likely to develop bipolar disorder compared to those who took their quetiapine monotherapy. Patients who took quetiapine for bipolar depression also had a higher rate of bipolar disorder.
“The findings suggest that patients who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder may benefit from the use of quetiapine as a treatment for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder,” said lead author Dr. Robert E. Stronk, M. D., assistant professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, and a professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine. “However, we do not know if quetiapine has an antidepressant effect on bipolar disorder. This study supports our conclusion that it may not be effective for patients who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder.”

Seroquel, known generically as quetiapine fumarate, is an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat various mental health disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. Seroquel works by reducing the levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain, thereby improving mood and sleep paralysis. This mechanism is particularly beneficial for patients with bipolar disorder or other mental health conditions. By blocking these neurotransmitters, Seroquel helps restore balance and reduce hallucinations, making it an effective treatment option for these patients.
Seroquel is typically taken orally, with or without food, 30 minutes to an hour before sexual activity. It is generally recommended to take the medication at bedtime to maintain a consistent dosage level in the body. However, it is important to note that Seroquel may take longer to work if taken with alcohol or certain medications. It is crucial to follow the prescribed dosage and frequency to achieve optimal results.
It is important to note that Seroquel should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider. It is not recommended to increase the dose without consulting a healthcare professional. Furthermore, Seroquel should not be taken with other medications or supplements, including non-stimulant medications like antipsychotics, certain antidepressants, and certain herbal supplements. Consulting a healthcare professional for personalized advice is crucial for ensuring safety and efficacy of the medication.
Seroquel is available in various forms, including tablets, oral suspension, and liquid. It is important to note that Seroquel is not a cure for mental health disorders and can be used to treat other conditions. Therefore, it should only be used as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
